Engineering Practices Laboratory

Workshop practices have become important in the industrial environment to produce products for the service of mankind. The knowledge of manufacturing practices is highly essential for all engineers and technocrats for familiarizing themselves with modern concepts of manufacturing technologies. Workshop practices gives the basic working knowledge required for the production of various engineering products. It explains the construction, function, use and application of different working tools, equipment, machines, as well as the technique of manufacturing a product from its raw material. Considering the general needs of engineering students in the country and the fact that they hardly get any exposure to hand tools, equipment’s, machines and manufacturing setups, a basic course in manufacturing science remains a core subject for all the branches of engineering. The contents include exposure to bench work and fitting, smithy and forging, sheet metal work, wood and wood working, casting, welding and machine shop practices.
Manufacturing processes are used for converting raw materials into finished products. Various processes, machinery, and operations will be examined with emphasis placed on understanding engineering materials and processing parameters that influence design considerations, product quality, and production costs. The objective of this laboratory is to study and practice the various machining operations like Taper Turning, External Thread cutting, Internal Thread Cutting, Eccentric Turning & Knurling in lathe, and to equip with the practical knowledge required in the core industries. The work benches are built with safety and the shop is large enough to carry out the machining and manufacturing processes comfortably. The exercises will help the students to produce components as per the given drawing using lathe machine, also to develop the basic machine ability concepts and improve the teamwork and entrepreneurial skills.

Manufacturing Technology Laboratory

This laboratory is aimed at providing an introduction to the Know-how of common processes used in industries for manufacturing parts by removal of material in a controlled manner. Auxiliary methods for machining to desired accuracy and quality will also be covered. The emphasis throughout the laboratory course will be on understanding the basic features of the processes rather than details of constructions of machine, or common practices in manufacturing or acquiring skill in the operation of machines. Evidently, acquaintance with the machine is desirable and the laboratory sessions will provide adequate opportunity for this.

Thermal Engineering Laboratory

The objective of this lab is to understand the basic principles in the areas of internal combustion engines, boilers and Refrigeration systems to under graduate and Post graduate students through a series of experiments. In this lab the experiments are performed to measure performance parameters of the systems such as Brake power, Efficiency, Torque , COP, mass of fuel. Students have a fairly good understanding of the theory underlying the experiments and the entire lab course is designed such that classroom lectures precede the lab work. The Thermal Engineering Laboratory is equipped with test facilities for doing research with in internal combustion engines for energy conversion.

CAD/CAM Laboratory

The objective is to develop of designs of various mechanical components using both 2D and 3D Software’s, and manufacture the required part. The lab is available to graduate the students in the fields of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing. At Under graduation level aid is given for the students to model the complete part. The basic knowledge can be used for successful accomplishment of project works. At post graduation level, the students can make use of advanced modules in the design software for their research work.
For the designed part student generates NC program with different CAM software packages, simulates the program for validation and manufactures parts with CNC machines. The CNC machines available in the laboratory can be utilized for advanced manufacturing research.

Dynamics of machines Laboratory

Dynamics of Machine Lab refers to study and simulation of a system's motion based on forces acting on it. These experiments aim at enhancing the knowledge of students on force analysis in a dynamic system and improve the understanding of inertial effects on them. This lab covers the basic concept of courses on Kinematics of Machine, Dynamics of Machine, Robotics and Vehicle Dynamics.

Metrology & Measurement Laboratory

Metrology & Measurement Laboratory is a well-equipped laboratory which provides ideas on hands on experience with various measuring instruments to utilize in industries. On evaluating mechanical properties of a given specimen or structure. This laboratory is scheduled for 5th semester Mechanical engineering students. Apart from curriculum, some additional experimental setups are there which helps the students to enhance their knowledge. Students also get opportunity to implement their ideas through various application oriented micro projects.

Mechatronics Laboratory

The Mechatronics Laboratory is an undergraduate lab facility to support the course and undergraduate research work. The central idea of these labs is to demonstrate the systems approach to design mechatronic systems, i.e., to design systems with integrated different domains, including a mechanical domain, electrical and electronic control domains. The labs contribute to the lecture course and facilitate innovative undergraduate research within the mechatronics thrust in vehicle and robotics engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
